The old saying goes, “Next Man Up!” But for Coastal Carolina, that meant looking to their fourth-string quarterback to try to pull out a victory in the Myrtle Beach Bowl against UTSA on Monday. In a game deemed “Battle Of The Birds” It would seemingly be a home game for Coastal Carolina, but they were the visiting team in this contest. Down several players due to the “Transfer Portal,” the task would prove to be too mighty to overcome, and as head coach Tim Beck would say “It just wasn’t our day.”
The Chants would be without two starting quarterbacks, two of CCU’s best offensive linemen, three of CCU’s best defensive players, and a host of other players either in the portal or declaring for the NFL Draft. Teams were assessed nine unnecessary roughness penalties to make matters worse on the day. The game was chippy from the start, and Tim Beck would state that “It was due to simmering frustration.” But he would decline to answer what that may have been. One could speculate it was due to the shorthandness of athletes.
With less than two minutes to play in the second half, Coastal was assessed a false start penalty for “Everyone but the center.” UTSA continued to attack redshirt freshman Tad Hudson, making it unpleasant to be in the pocket. Coastal Carolina will try to look for a starting quarterback this offseason, among other tweaks, to try to fill the void that is the transfer portal. They will also be in search of an offensive coordinator.
Sophomore quarterback Owen McCown picked apart the Coastal defense all game long and earned himself the Myrtle Beach Bowl’s MVP. The name may look familiar because Owen’s dad is none other than the seasoned NFL vet and current quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings, Josh McCown. McCown has a bright future ahead of him and received many offers coming out of high school.
After the game, Tim Beck would address the need to fill the roster by saying, “We will get it fixed this offseason.”
