Let me start off by saying that I was never a HUGE fan of Blatt, but at the same time, I believe the Cavs owed it to him to let him at least finish the season. After going 83-40 as the Cavs head coach and leading them to the NBA Finals last year Blatt was let go in a bit of a shocking fashion. Blatt’s tenure with the Cavs started off rocky from the start. Starting the season 20-19 last year was well below expectation. Being ignored by players and staff was also an embarrassment to the organization, not too mention Blatt as well. The Cavs were also reportedly ignoring Blatts play-calls too. Rumors swirled of players disrespecting Blatt left and right. Move forward to the end of the season, the Cavs roll through the playoffs and make it to the NBA Finals minus Love, who was hurt against the Celtics, and would miss the rest of the playoffs. During game one of the NBA Finals Kyrie Irving also got hurt fracturing his kneecap. He would be done as well. Even with all of the injuries the Cavs took the Golden State Warriors to six games after going up 2-1 in the Finals. By Cleveland standards this was a failure, but all was well in “The Land” with the team headed in the right direction to bring the city a championship.
For the start of this season, the Cavs were off to a tear. Sitting at 30-11 with the number one spot in the East pretty much a lock. The hammer dropped. Breaking news would come across the screen saying that David Blatt had been fired by the Cavaliers. An unprecedented move to this point by David Griffin. People were scrambling to find out what had transpired. Blatt fans were blaming LeBron James. James would have to defend himself saying that “I found out like everyone else and did not influence the decision in any way”. For those of you that do not know Blatt is a God among men overseas leading the Russian National team to numerous championships. Apparently Griffin wanted the team to go in another direction naming assistant head coach and former player Tyronn Lue the new head coach signing a three year deal. Lue is a favorite among the team. David Griffin was asked why make the move now? Griffin says: “I felt like there was disdain in the locker room, even after a win the team was a bit down, not excited”
David Griffin is going to do what is best for this team to win a championship now “in the LeBron James era”. He always has. With that said, I do not believe that this is over. I personally thought that the team would come out against the Bulls last night playing relaxed, but, that wasn’t the case. The team came out flat, the team came out shooting a terrible percentage from the three. The Cavs were torched on the defensive side of the ball. I thought that we would see Kevin Love take a bigger role in the offense since Blatt wanted him to stay on the perimeter, again, which we did not. As I stated earlier. More moves are going to be made. I am a fan of Lue, but I thought it was purely disrespectful to not let Blatt finish the season at least. Time will tell how things transpire, but until then we have to have faith in what direction David Griffin is taking this team. The team is in better shape now than it was in the past before the first LeBron James era. You could hear a pen drop at the old Gund Arena! Now the place is bumping night after night.
