Yesterday, I made it out to the New Orleans Saints Training Camp at “The Greenbrier Resort” in Lewisburg, WV. As a fan, it is a great place to watch practice. You’re right on top of the field and can see and hear all of the action, unlike in a pro game. The Saints are one of the NFL’s elite teams right now, and are considered one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl. You could tell that it was still early in camp, and the young guys were trying to mesh and find a rhythm. Some of the young guys, like QB’s Logan Kilgore and Ryan Griffin, were impressive also. The Saints had around 75 players on two fields trying to work everyone out, and get a look at each and everyone of them before the teams start “Cut Days” in the coming weeks. Each NFL team will wither down to 53 men at the start of the season, while assigning some to practice squads. About 200 people were on hand for the 3 hour practice yesterday. Being from this area, it’s not everyday you get to see a NFL Training Camp that up close and personal. The facility is beautiful, and so is the surrounding areas. Saints players were saying that they loved it here, mainly due to the humidity being nowhere near what is usually is in New Orleans.
Kids and adults alike were seeing their favorite players like never before. A few of the game’s veterans were on hand practicing, such as Drew Brees, Zach Streif, Curtis Lofton, Marques Colston, Shayne Graham, etc. Other vets were out with injury such as well traveled and wiley vet Champ Bailey. After it was all said and done, players came over to sign autographs and thank everyone for coming out to support something that was once unheard of for our state. Drew Brees, Robert Meachem, Zach Streif, Jimmy Graham, Shayne Graham, new comers Logan Kilgore, and Ryan Griffin all signed after practice. All practices are open to the public and are only $5 to be shuttled over to the fields by bus. It’s a small price to pay for what is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our local kids. The Saints have signed a 3 year deal, and will return to have training camp at the Greenbrier for the next 2 years. I’m looking forward to going back!
